Fin is an AI agent that talks to customers, takes actions in connected systems and resolves requests without a human. It is built by the company formerly called Intercom, which renamed itself to Fin in May 2026 according to VentureBeat. Fin can run inside the Intercom helpdesk or on top of another helpdesk. Usage is billed per outcome, not per seat.
What Fin is
Fin is presented as one agent that works in roles. Roles define what Fin optimizes for in a conversation, and Fin only activates the roles you configure, switching between them based on context.
| Role | What it does |
|---|---|
| Service | Resolves customer issues with answers and actions across channels, 24/7. |
| Sales | Runs inbound conversations: engages prospects, guides discovery, qualifies leads and books meetings. |
| Ecommerce | Acts as a shopping assistant: narrows a catalogue, recommends products and guides customers to purchase. |
Fin, Copilot and Operator
- Fin is customer-facing. It can close a conversation with no human involved.
- Copilot sits beside a human agent and suggests replies. It exists in Intercom and for Salesforce agents.
- Fin Operator is for the support operations team. It spots problems and opportunities and acts on them, for example tuning Fin and keeping knowledge current. It was listed in May 2026. VentureBeat reported early access for Pro tier users with general availability planned for summer 2026. I could not confirm the general availability date.
Where Fin runs
- Intercom helpdesk: Fin is natively integrated.
- Other helpdesks: Fin connects by API and hands off to your team in the existing helpdesk. Named integrations: Salesforce Service Cloud, HubSpot, Freshdesk and Freshchat. Intercom also names Zendesk as supported. Intercom says setup takes under an hour on these platforms and that Fin follows the existing assignment rules and automations.
- Generic platforms: a lightweight deployment (February 2026) uses the Messenger as the interface for platforms without a deep integration.
How Fin is built
Intercom describes a continuous improvement loop called the Fin Flywheel: Train, Test, Deploy, Analyse. The main building blocks are below.
| Block | What it does |
|---|---|
| Knowledge | Public articles, documents, snippets and public URLs, managed in one Content page. External sources sync weekly (up to 100 sources), Intercom articles update immediately. Fin can use images from synced websites and send images and GIFs in answers. |
| Guidance | Text instructions that define how Fin speaks, clarifies and hands off. Since April 2026 every change to live Guidance is saved as a version that can be restored. Content Guidance (March 2026) sets which sources Fin uses for which question types. |
| Procedures | Multi-step flows for complex queries such as subscription issues or transaction disputes. They mix natural language with deterministic controls (if/else conditions and Python code blocks). Procedures can be generated from a plain language description. |
| Data connectors | Let Fin read and update data in other systems. Ready-made templates exist for tools such as Stripe, Shopify and Statuspage. Fin can also act through a Zapier MCP connector. |
| Analytics | Performance dashboard (resolution rate, involvement rate, CX Score), Topics Explorer, Suggestions that improve answers in one click, and Fin Attributes that detect things like issue type or sentiment. |
Identity and personalisation
- Tone, formality and answer length can be customised.
- Audiences and Identities let you reuse groups of customers and give each brand its own persona. One personality per workspace applies, so brands needing different personalities need separate workspaces.
- Fin can use customer name, email and location out of the box (March 2026).
- Fin Memory (July 2026) remembers past conversations and carries context across channels.
- Fin detects and resolves conversations in 45+ languages, per Intercom's 2023 announcement. Check the current language list before promising a specific language.
Capabilities
| Capability | What it does |
|---|---|
| Actions in conversation | Handles refunds, cancellations and account changes using your logic and live data from connected systems. |
| Human in the loop | Procedures can pause and ask a teammate for review or approval (May 2026), then resume automatically. Escalation rules can be scoped to audiences. |
| Wait steps | Procedures can pause for the customer to do something elsewhere (Wait step), or for an external system to finish work such as identity checks or payments (Wait for Webhook). Both July 2026. |
| Proactive Procedures | A website click or a signal from your own systems can start a Procedure, so Fin opens the conversation already knowing why (August 2026). |
| Attachments | Reads images, PDFs and HEIC images customers share (PDFs and HEIC added April 2026). |
| Spam handling | Filters phishing and spam on email. A Spam inbox view (April 2026) shows what was flagged and lets you re-queue conversations. |
| Testing | Preview conversations end to end, Batch Test on real conversations, and Simulations for Procedures, Voice Procedures and Sales. |
| Reporting | Escalation reporting shows why Fin handed off (August 2026). Procedure metrics show outcome rate, resolution rate and CX Score over 30 days. Content Shared by Fin shows links sent to prospects. |
| Incident Detection | Watches incoming conversations and flags an emerging incident within minutes (August 2026). |
Channels
- Messenger and live chat
- Email: answers use the full thread history. Settings cover follow-up emails after inactivity (1 hour to 7 days), whether Fin replies when only CC'd, and whether it replies to everyone or the original sender. An email preview lets you see replies before going live.
- Phone (Fin Voice): see next section.
- SMS and WhatsApp
- Slack, Discord and Telegram: Discord has control over which conversations Fin joins. Telegram added June 2026.
- Social channels
Fin Voice
- Answers calls, handles questions and connects customers to human agents when needed.
- Can be placed inside phone Workflows to route calls by caller type or office hours before Fin picks up.
- Shows the knowledge sources, guidance and instructions used on each call, for auditing.
- Custom pronunciation rules, dynamic noise reduction and 11 additional voices (February and March 2026).
- Fin Voice 2 (June 2026) runs on the Fin Apex Flash model. Intercom claims a 24.5% higher resolution rate and 0.43 seconds faster responses.
- Simulations for Voice Procedures test full call conversations without real calls.
Fin for Sales
- Engages prospects, supports product discovery and qualifies leads in real time (April 2026).
- Books meetings through Calendly, HubSpot Meetings or Chili Piper without the lead leaving the conversation.
- Lead Recovery re-engages quiet prospects or closes the conversation based on your rules.
- Connects to Salesforce (automatic data connector) and Marketo (template).
- Sales Simulations let you test prospect conversations from a persona or opening message.
Fin for Ecommerce
- Guides shoppers while they browse and narrows a catalogue to the right options (May 2026).
- Revenue Attribution (July 2026) tracks attributed revenue and average order value against your store baseline, with each order linked to the conversation behind it.
Quality management
- Monitors continuously evaluate conversations against your standards. Since June 2026 they cover human conversations too.
- Custom Scorecards and AI Scoring let you define criteria such as tone and accuracy and score at scale.
- Review Queue and Issues track flagged conversations to resolution.
- CX Score rates support quality without surveys. Benchmarking against peers was added in April 2026.
Models
Fin Apex 1.0 (March 2026) is described as Intercom's first custom model that writes the final answer for every customer, built for customer service. Fin Apex Flash is used for latency-sensitive tasks such as voice.
Developer and API capabilities
- Fin Agent API: supports multi-agent architectures so Fin can operate inside a broader orchestration system. Enterprise only (February 2026).
- Fin CLI (April 2026): lets developers and agents create a workspace, configure Fin and build a help centre from the terminal.
- MCP and data integrations: connect Fin to tools and data, including a Zapier MCP connector (July 2026).
- Workflow trigger: fires when Fin closes a conversation, for a resolution, inactivity or a natural end.
Pricing
- Intercom lists $0.99 per outcome. All Intercom plans include access to Fin.
- The metric changed from Resolutions to Outcomes on March 12, 2026.
- A billable outcome is a resolution (no further help requested after Fin's last answer) or a Procedure you configured to end in a handoff to a human or workflow. One outcome is charged per conversation.
- Usage limits and alerts can be configured, and Fin can be stopped from giving AI answers when a limit is reached.
- Intercom advertises a 14-day free trial and an Early Stage Program for startups. Check current terms before quoting them.
Performance claims
- Intercom states an average resolution of 76% of customer queries.
- Faye Digital, an Intercom service partner, gives a range of 50 to 70%.
- Both are vendor or partner figures. Results depend on content quality and query mix.
